Introduction to Blockchain and Web3

Blockchain is a distributed database that allows for the creation of a digital ledger of transactions that is secured and validated by a network of computers on the internet rather than a central authority. This technology enables the creation of secure and transparent systems for recording and verifying transactions, and it has the potential to disrupt a wide range of industries by enabling the creation of new types of digital applications and services.

Web3 is a term that refers to the development of decentralized applications (DApps) that are built on top of decentralized protocols and infrastructure, such as blockchain. These applications are designed to be open, transparent, and resistant to censorship, and they often rely on smart contracts and other blockchain-based technologies to function. Web3 technologies are still in their early stages of development, but they have the potential to transform the way that people interact with the internet and with each other by enabling new forms of collaboration and value exchange.

What is a Blockchain?

Blockchain, it's one of the biggest tech

buzzwords over the last decade, yet its

underlying technology remains a mystery

for many.

This course is one of the ongoing efforts

of Web3 Foundation to demystify

Blockchain technology and its

terminology.

Just from its name, it is easy to infer

that it is some sort of a chain made of

blocks, right? At a very high level

Blockchain stores data in blocks that

are linked together via cryptography.

If you're trying to look up the

definition of Blockchain on the internet, you

would notice that it varies slightly

from source to source, but several words

show up in common. Words like "distributed,"

"peer-to-peer," "decentralized," "secure,"                       "open,"

"immutable," "ledger," etc.

You would also notice that the word

Blockchain means different things to

different communities,

some with very strong political and

social views on what it should be.

In this course, we will examine

Blockchains from a technological point

of view and see how they evolved over

time. So let's dive right in.
